Late night TV watching is maybe a bi-weekly occurrence in this house. Life and work make staying up for the 11:00 pm news hard enough. Late night talk shows have never been in my “must-see TV” category, but sometimes that forgotten piece of caffeine-laced chocolate will delay the opportunity for quality REM time.
If I could watch any on them on a regular basis, my choice would be Craig Ferguson, but his Late, Late slot is especially challenging. Actually, the few times I do get to watch him is when I have fallen asleep on the couch about 10:30’ish, and wake up to find his show on the screen. He has a remarkable ability to talk to anyone.
Getting back to the original point, Leno and Conan and Letterman aren’t on my radar that much, but I have to say that Conan is really getting on my nerves. Never liked his version of the Tonight Show. He’s too hyper and antsy for me. At that time of the night, I want to laugh a little and enjoy myself. Watching someone who doesn’t seem comfortable in his own skin isn’t the recipe for relaxation I am looking for.
Of course Conan is disappointed. But, there have been enough out-takes on the morning shows and newscasts that I do watch, to spur me to make some snarky comments of my own: Conan needs to be a man– an adult–and shut up. He sounds, and is behaving like a whiny, spoiled child.
When Leno was demoted last year, he wasn’t happy, but he did what they wanted him to do. He gave up his 17-year gig and made room for the tantrum-throwing brat. He showed himself to be a class act. Do you think that if Leno had behaved the way Conan is behaving now that NBC would want to move him (Leno) back?
The other part of it is the ratings–translate that to money. Conan’s ratings have been consistently lower than in the 11:30 slot than Leno’s were. Think how many new shows get pulled after 2 or 3 weeks.
All in all, it occurs to me that perhaps this is the best thing that can happen to Conan. Just like an over-stimulated child, perhaps if he gets to bed a little earlier, his disposition will improve and people will like him better.
